Last stop of the first expedition of Tomé de Souza, which resulted in the founding of Salvador and the Arraial de Nossa Senhora d 'Ajuda, would coincidentally become the first pilgrimage point for the Catholic faith in Brazil thanks to the so-called "Miracle of the Holy". In 1560 from the foot of the church a clear fountain of water welled and to this day is a mark of the faith and healing of the devotees.
