The castles and forts were trading posts for exchanging articles of trade from Europe like drinkables, medicine, clothes with raw materials from the West African sub region like minerals, food and cash crops.
The exchange of goods was by the barter system as both buyers and sellers could not communicate in each other's language. What was known as the silent trade where body language was vital in communicating.
