Marjan hill is considered to be the green lungs of Split. This peaceful natural oasis is accessible right from the old town and as such could be considered as counterpart to sometimes overcrowded city streets. The hill these days is a park forest and recreational zone where locals go to enjoy their leisure time. In the past, Marjan hill was mostly farmland, with few hermitages and numerous shrines, where those who wished to get away from the civilization, looking for solitude and spiritual peace could do so while still keeping the benefits of having town not that far away.
