Kanheri Caves and Sanjay Gandhi National Park

The Kanheri Caves are a group of 109 Caves and Rock-Cut Monuments in the lush green Forest of the National Park in the western outskirts of Mumbai. They contain Buddhist sculptures dating from the 1st century BCE. This site is on a beautiful hillside and a secret hidden treasure of Mumbai. The caves contain Buddhist sculptures and relief carvings, paintings and inscriptions. Most of the caves were Buddhist viharas, meant for living, studying, and meditating.
