The six most sacred abodes of Murugan was mentioned in Tamil sangam literature, "Thirumurugatrupadai", written by Nakkeerar and in "Thiruppugazh", written by Arunagirinathar. The six abodes are Palani, Thiruthani, Swamimalai, Pazhamudircholai, Thirupparankunram and Thiruchendur.
