What To Expect

Located on a hill, Arezzo dominates the four valleys that compose its province. Once an important Etruscan enclave and then Roman outpost, Arezzo turned into a great cultural and artistic center thanks to Guido Tarlati, who was the local bishop in the 14th century. At the end of that century, Arezzo passed under the domination of the Medici family, thus changing its history forever. The historic center still shows several beautiful masterpieces of Italian art, which you will see during the guided walking tour.Your private guide will show you the 1000-year-old Parish Church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the gothic Cathedral with a complex marble altar (Arca of Saint Donato, Arezzo’s protector) and the medieval Dominican and Franciscan churches - the former houses a crucifix painted by a young Cimabue, the latter world-famous frescoes by Piero della Francesca. You will be struck by the medieval palaces in the impressive Piazza Grande, the main square with its tower houses that form the perfect scenery for the Antique Market (the oldest and most known in Italy which takes place on the 1st Sunday of each month) and for the Joust of the Saracen (on 3rd Saturday of June and 1st Sunday of September).
