What To Expect

The Amsterdam Museum cares for more than 100,000 objects, collected over almost five centuries. Artworks and historical items were commissioned, donated, or purchased by the city council and other institutions, by wealthy benefactors, and later of course by the museum itself, since its establishment in 1926. Here, we show a wide selection of this huge collection. Beginning on this right side of the room, you will walk chronologically through the history of Amsterdam, from the 16th century to the present. Inside the laboratory, the interior space in the middle of the room, we focus on themes that are closely related to the city, but are not always included in its traditional “grand” history. We regularly expand the collection and in this way continue to build on the collective memory of our city. Important artistic and historical moments are highlighted, with an emphasis on making space for critical voices and surprising readings. The polyvocal story of Amsterdam is never finished, so we remain, together with our visitors and partners, open-minded and curious.
