The heart and soul of Portugal during Medieval times. Guimarães, once a capital, is best described as the birthplace of Portugal and where the first king - Afonso Henriques - was born.
However, Guimarães is much more than the well-renowned 10th-century castle. The old town encompasses 14th-century buildings, a previous Jewish quarter, defensive and military structures against the Moors during the Dark Ages, and much more.
