St. Basil's Cathedral is a unique phenomenon of Russian architecture, one of a kind. “If I could, I would present it to you in the palm of your hand,” wrote the French emperor Napoleon to his wife Josephine.
The appearance of the church leaves no one indifferent. But not everyone knows that St. Basil's Cathedral is the second later name of the Intercession Cathedral. Why did it supplant the main name of the cathedral? Who was Basil the Blessed? Who ordered and built the cathedral? How is the temple structured from the inside? You will learn about this, as well as about the unique exhibits of the cathedral-museum on a guided tour.
You will walk through the intricate labyrinths of the temple and see rare frescoes and icons depicting St. Basil the Blessed and the miracles he performed during his lifetime. At the cathedral's exposition you will see chains of the 16th century and fragments of domes. During the tour, you will learn what the word “go nuts” means, what an ancient safe deposit box looked like, and learn to understand medieval architecture.
You will have to touch the riddle of ancient architects, which has not been solved to this day. You will learn how the holy image of St. Nicholas changed the Tsar's plan and erected a church for himself in the ensemble of the cathedral. Plots and a selection of ancient icons, single masterpieces of the Art Nouveau style - all the artifacts appeared in the cathedral for a reason. The Cathedral of St. Basil the Blessed will gladly share with you its history, legend and miracles.
