What To Expect

Get ready for a multi-day tour to Chumbe Island Coral Park, the first privately managed marine protected area in the world. This unique island hosts a fully protected coral reef sanctuary and forest reserve and is an internationally acclaimed conservation area. There, you will be able to experience one of East Africa’s most pristine coral reefs. Visiting the reserve also means contributing to the future of kids in Zanzibar as the revenue generated goes not only to manage the conservation but also supports the environmental education programs with local schools and communities. You will stay overnight in an eco-bungalow which is specially designed to have zero impact on the environment. By generating its own energy and water with solar water heating and photovoltaic electricity, as well as rainwater catchment and filtration, each bungalow is a self-sufficient unit. During your stay on Chumbe Island, you can choose from the following activities that are included in the price. Please contact directly the hotel representative and coordinate the activities:

  • Guided snorkeling tour in the marine sanctuary which hosts more than 50 types of corals and over 500 reef fish species
  • Guided forest trail. Walk with an experienced ranger through the forest with a small population of endangered Ader's duiker antelopes and nearly 80 species of birds
  • Climb to the historical lighthouse over 132 steps and enjoy spectacular views of the island and Zanzibar
  • Guided Coconut crab observation walk at night-time with the full detailed information from the rangers
  • Guided inter-tidal walk (dependent on tide conditions) to explore the rock pools, impressive overhangs, and Chumbe's inter-tidal marine environment
  • Sunset sail on a Ngalawa boat, which a traditional dugout outrigger fishing boat that is commonly used by local fisherman
