This Reconstruction City Walking Tour is intertwined with stories of Beaufort’s Antebellum and Civil War past forming stepping-stones that lead to new beginnings and brighter futures for once enslaved peoples, if only for a short time. Upon the rich history soaked streets, you will see the houses where the very first African American men were elected as delegates to the 1864 National Republican Convention in Baltimore, Maryland. You will see the site where the first 513 African Americans voted in South Carolina November 19th, 1867 in the “Hall of Justice!” (And the 15th Amendment isn’t ratified until 1870!)
You will walk into the neighborhoods once home to only freed whites now home to white and black alike.
