Meerkats are also referred to as Suricate or in German as Erdmännchen and are known to be part of the Mongoose family. They are small species of foraging mammals and they usually inhabit semi-arid and semi-desert environments in Southern Africa. They have a very social behavior and are well known for their unique upright stance position. Buffelsdrift Game Lodge is situated in the heart of the Klein Karoo and offers the ideal environment and vegetation for meerkats to thrive.
Get close to these charming creatures: after a trained ranger meets you in the Lookout Lounge, where you can enjoy a warm cup of coffee and rusks, you will then head to the safari vehicle that will take you to the meerkat burrows. On the way to the burrows, guests are usually lucky and manage to spot some of the 22 species of animals on the reserve. Of course, it is highly recommended to guests to remain on the vehicle as there dangerous animals around. While waiting for the meerkats to emerge in the breaking dawn, the ranger will explain interesting facts and behaviors of the suricate family.
