Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba guided tour

+9 photos
The Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba is unlike anything else you’ll find in Spain. In fact, the term ‘mosque-cathedral’ is a rarity all around the world. This place has sat nestled in the city of Córdoba for over 800 years. And, it’s so impressive, UNESCO has even designated it as a World Heritage Site, thanks to its unique mish-mashed history and striking appearance. As you’d expect from a Mosque-Cathedral, this place represents the literal joining of two religions and cultures that both play a super important role on the city’s identity. The temple started off as a Mosque back when an Islamic caliphate ruled over Spain in the 700s. Its sandstone-coloured exterior and red-and-beige interior archways have stood the test of time and when the temple was converted into a cathedral in the 13th century, this Islamic décor was accentuated with some Christian touches, like a Gothic chapel and even a Renaissance-style ceiling in the 16th century. You’ll get to see all of these different features during your tour, which is led by an expert guide who knows the temple inside and out. You’ll hear about all the smaller touches and design details in the courtyard and minarets, as well as have some time to appreciate the large worshipping areas. Before you leave, you’ll also have some free time, too, so you can explore on your own for a bit.
