The Outlander, Palaces and Jacobites experience from Edinburgh

+3 photos
Depart from Edinburgh in the morning, heading north across the Firth of Forth towards the Tuilyies Standing Stones. These stones are reminiscent of those seen in popular television series Outlander, marking portals for time travel. From there, journey to the Royal Burgh of Culross, a textbook example of a 17th-century Scottish village. Fans of Outlander may recognise it as the setting for Claire’s herb garden and Cranesmuir Village's Mercat Cross. The tour continues to Doune Castle (optional extra), known as Castle Leoch in Outlander, the stronghold of Clan MacKenzie. Then, head south towards the Royal Burgh of Linlithgow. Here, you'll have time to grab some lunch and visit Linlithgow Palace, which doubles as Wentworth Prison in Outlander.Next, travel to Blackness Castle (optional extra), dubbed “the ship that never sailed” due to its distinctive triangular shape. In Outlander, this castle serves as Fort William, the base of Black Jack Randall. The final stop depends on the season. In summer months, continue to Midhope Castle (optional extra), a 16th-century townhouse that stands in for Lallybroch, Jamie Fraser’s family home in Outlander. If Midhope is closed for filming or if your tour is during winter, instead proceed to the Forth Bridges for a spectacular view of the bridges spanning the Forth.
